CFB North Bay - CF-100

Location:  Nipissing District   N 46 21.546  W 079 25.025
Inside CFB North Bay, on Manston Crescent, near the museum.

This aircraft and memorial was erected by 422 Wing Air Force Association, in recognition of all who flew and worked on the CF-100 Canuck.  The CF-100 was the only Canadian designed fighter to ever enter mass production.  It served the RCAF and Belgian Air Forces during the 1950's and 60's, and was used here in North Bay by the 414 Black Knight squadron for electronic warfare until 1981.  The aircraft was a reliable all-weather interceptor during the days of the cold war, and proved suitable for many roles during its lifetime.
The memorial here consists of a CF-100 on a cement pedestal, with two plaques mounted on the base to commemorate those who lost their lives flying the Canuck, and to those who flew and worked on her.

Port Colborne

Location:  Niagara Region   N 42 57.841  W 079 15.377
At the top of the hill in H.H. Knoll Lakeside Park, 160 Sugarloaf Street.

This tall granite cenotaph was re-dedicated in 1952, by Major G. Smith Macdonald, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56.  Originally the memorial was erected as a monument to those killed in World War I, but at the 1952 ceremony a new brass plaque was unveiled to include the names of those lost subsequently in World War II.  Since that time, further smaller plaques have been added to acknowledge the sacrifices of Korea and Afghanistan.  On the front of the memorial is also a plaque to acknowledge that during the time of the World Wars, a portion of the present town was originally known as Humberstone.  A beautiful and serene memorial that overlooks Port Colborne's largest park and Lake Erie waterfront.

Lakeview

Location:  Peel Region   N 43 34.394  W 079 34.021
On 3rd Street, east of Cawthra Road, in front of the A.N.A.F. Club.

The village of Lakeview was once a quiet yet vital settlement along the shores of Lake Ontario, but as of a mass amalgamation in 1968, it is now a small part of the City of Mississauga.
Lakeview played a key part in both World Wars.  In the First World War it was home to the Long Branch Aerodrome, a flight training ground for the Royal Flying Corps.  After the war the aerodrome was closed, only to be used once again in the Second World War as a Militia Training Grounds.  Today, no trace remains but for an Ontario Historic Plaque.
During World War II, a large munitions factory was established in Lakeview, producing Lee-Enfield rifles and Sten machine-guns.  The factory closed in 1976 and has since been demolished.

The memorial featured today is found in front of the Army Navy & Air Force Veterans Club Branch 262, which hosts a community group of veterans and local citizens.  Resting beside the memorial is a pair of WWII anti-aircraft guns, proudly displayed and cherished by the A.N.A.F.
More information on this group can be found at:  http://www.anaf262.org/

Wingham

Location:  Huron County   N 43 53.160  W 081 18.770
On the east side of London Road, on the corner of John Street and Diagonal Road.

This has to be one of my favourite memorials I have found during my travels around Ontario.  The statue at the top of the cenotaph is different than any other I have seen, very unique and attractive in the distinguished bronze form of a Great War soldier.
The memorial was unveiled in August 1924, by none other than retired General Sir Arthur Currie, one of the greatest military leaders Canada has ever produced.  The memorial is dedicated the the dead of the First World War, the names engraved in stone for all to remember.  Plaques were later added to represent those lost in World War II, Korea and Afghanistan.
The town of Wingham has become much more famous since the talented author and local resident Alice Munro was graciously awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for her beautiful stories of this area.

A more detailed list of the names is available at the Canadian Forces website, which details what happened to each person whose name appears on this memorial and whose life was lost in service of our country.
