Napanee

Location:  Lennox and Addington County   N 44 15.102  W 76 56.973
On Thomas Street East, in front of the museum, at Adelphi Street.

A bright white marble memorial stands in front of the old Napanee Town Hall, now the Leeds and Addington County Museum.  This is a grand sight, both the historic building and the beautiful memorial dedicated to those from this county who died in the Great War.  The names of the dead are engraved on all four sides of this impressive monument.  Those who died in the Second World War are remembered on a stone placed in front of the cenotaph, much like that found in the cenotaph in Lindsay.  On each side is also found a stone bearing the Union Jack flag and the battles fought in the Great War.  On the top of the memorial is a bowl containing the eternal flame of remembrance, which was not lit when I visited,...no comment.  A smaller stone at the rear of the memorial recognizes the Korean War.
All in all, I was very impressed with this memorial and the great contribution of the men of this area.

Location:  Peterborough County   N 44 26.068  W 77 52.867
On the north side of George Street East, at the corner of Mill Street.

A very nice memorial representing the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Metheun, found near the Community Centre.  The memorial is sponsored by the local Royal Canadian Legion Branch #389, which is located nearby.  The names listed of those lost in the World Wars are shown under their respective townships before they amalgamated in 1998.  Once again, the list names of those who paid the ultimate price is longer for the First World War than the Second, showing the brutality and devastation wrought by the Great War upon so many small communities.

Durham

Location:   Grey County    N 44 10.626  W 80 49.078
On the north side of Mill Street, at the corner of Albert Street North.

This is a beautiful memorial to the men of this village, who died overseas fighting for freedom and glory.  The statue that stands tall on top of this cenotaph is the same one we have seen on many other memorials, however this proud soldier is gilded in a gold colour, stunning to the eye.  The memorial, like most others in Ontario, was first erected to honour those lost in the Great War, with their names engraved in the red granite.  At a later date, more names were added after the Second World War and Korea.
A small garden beside the cenotaph was dedicated in 1970, to mark the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Holland.  Also found in the memorial park is wheeled German trench mortar, in fine condition given its age and the exposure to the elements.  The property is maintained by Branch 308 of the Royal Canadian Legion.
The majority of cenotaphs and memorials in this part of Ontario are very well done, reminders of the sacrifices made by the men and the families of these small farming communities.

Lindsay

Location:  Kawartha Lakes Region   N 44 21.255  W 78 44.432
In front of the library, at the corner of Victoria Avenue N and Kent Street W.

Lindsay has long been a bastion of military support, playing host to the storied Midland Regiment and the incomparable Sir Sam Hughes.  The cenotaph, located in front of the public library is proud to honour the brave men of this area who fought in the World Wars.  Originally erected after the First World War, the names of the dead are engraved on the back of the marble shaft.  After the Second World War, a second slab of stone was added at ground level with the names of those lost in the that conflict, and finally one last name was added after the Korean War.
A bronze statue of a resting soldier stands tall on top of the beautiful monument.  The sides of the cenotaph list the names of many of the famous battles of the Great War.

Location:  Renfrew County   N 45 08.379 W 77 16.504
At the corner of Highway 28 and Bridge Street, in the church yard.

This memorial is a reminder of the dedication of local citizens and members of the Legion, to honour those who served and died in the name of our country.  The memorial located here, beside St. Luke's United Church, was dedicated by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #328, of Northbrook Ontario, along with heartless work and devotion by member James Wright, as well as local communities.  A side plaque is dedicated to Mr. Wright and the Legion, for making this cenotaph a reality.  Thank you to all who made it possible.
