Smiths Falls - WWII Memorial

 

Location:  Lanark County     N 44 54.372   W -76 .01.497
On the west side of Elmsley Street North, south of Cornelia Street.  Across the road from the hospital.
 
This memorial, located on the grounds of the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre, has moved location over the past few years.  Its new home is located closer to the road, much easier to see now, and in late 2018, a LAV vehicle was added to the spot.  I visited in July 2018 and there was no LAV at the time, but my associate researcher Louise Bellec visited later in the year and discovered the new addition.  Some of the photos will show the LAV, while others may not.
The Memorial is dedicated to the men of Smiths Falls who gave their lives in World War II.  Given the size of the town, the long list of names found here is a tribute to the sacrifices made by the soldiers, sailors and airmen who fought for freedom, and of the great losses suffered by the local families. 
The LAV vehicle is usually located near memorials honouring the sacrifices of the Afghanistan War, it still brings much more visible attention to this small cenotaph.  There are other memorials located in Smiths Falls that will be covered in more detail at a later date.

At the corner of Frederick Street and Duke Street E.
 
This grand memorial stands proudly in a small park in the heart of the city of Kitchener.  The nineteen foot high granite cenotaph is a replica of the British Empire memorial in Whitehall, London, England.  It was first unveiled in May, 1929 by Honourable W.D. Ross, Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario. Originally it was located in an island in Frederick Street, and in 1949 it was moved in front of the former City Hall.  Finally in 1973, the cenotaph was moved to its current location and inscriptions were also added to recognize WWII and Korea.  The stunning memorial was reconsecrated in June of 1973 in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness The Duke Of Edinburgh.
Each year, the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire, donate four new flags for the memorial and each night the memorial is bathed in light of floodlights.  A beautiful park with benches and landscaping surrounds the grounds of the memorial, although the benches are often the nightly resting places of local homeless.  Sad to see such a beautiful memorial dedicated to the brave soldiers who fought and died for our freedom and for our country, to be used by the less fortunate among us.
A separate plaque gives a brief history on the monument.  The main branches of the Armed Forces and the names of the major battles are also engraved in the granite stone.

Cornwall - Silver Cross Remembrance Park

 

Location: Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry County.

This cenotaph is situated at the Silver Cross Remembrance Park at the corner of Pitt St and Tollgate Rd E.

 

The park has just a wrought iron gate with a bed of flowers under it and a cenotaph.

The cenotaph itself is very simple, divided into three panels. On top of the middle panel, engraved is the Memorial Cross also known as the Silver Cross.

The Memorial Cross, established in 1919, is a Canadian medal awarded to the mother, widow, widower or next of kin of any member of the Canadian Forces who lost their life in active service including peacekeeping and other international operations.

Every year, a Silver Cross Mother (chosen by the Royal Canadian Legion) is chosen amongst the mothers who received the medal, to lay a wreath during the Remembrance Day ceremony at the National War Memorial.

The Memorial (Silver) Cross Medal, can be worn by the recipients anytime. It is engraved with the name, rank and service number of their child or spouse.
