Buckhorn

Location:  Peterborough County  N 44 33.214  W 078 21.681
In front of the Buckhorn Community Centre, on Lakehurst Road (Regional Road 37).

This memorial was erected in 2019, to replace the aging memorial that was originally erected in 1947 and later moved to this location.  I featured the original memorial in November 2012 for those who wish to look back.  http://ontariowarmemorials.blogspot.com/2012/11/buckhorn.html

The new memorial is in the style of a red granite maple leaf.  It features a Remembrance Walkway lined with stones to honour those who served.  The names of the local men who died in the World Wars and Afghanistan are engraved in the memorial labelled "Heroes of Yesterday".  The names are the same as those found on the original memorial.  A very well-done memorial to honour those who paid the ultimate price for freedom.

Alliston

Location:  Simcoe County, New Tecumseth   N 44 09.028  W 079 52.249
Located on the north east corner of Albert Street and Paris Street, beside the Curling Club.

The cenotaph in Alliston was originally featured on this blog-site in August 2012, and the Union Public School Plaque was documented in June 2012, but due to upgrades and recent additions, it is time to once again feature this beautiful memorial.

The main cenotaph was updated by adding two black granite steles to each side of the main memorial, these featuring the many conflicts that Canadians have bravely taken part in over the years.  Each war or conflict is given a brief description to educate the observer about each of these armed conflicts.  As well, the back of the memorial lists the Battle Honours of these wars, a very nice touch that should not be missed.  Benches featuring silhouettes of WWI soldiers have also been added.

A mural was painted on the side of the Curling Club facing the memorial, beautifully detailing stories from local sources that now appear in living colour for all to appreciate.  A very fitting tribute to all who have served.

This past month has also seen the WWI Memorial, that was located in front of Alliston Union Public School, moved onto the grounds of the main cenotaph, proudly displayed in front of the memorial.  The grounds of the old school had been sold and the memorial needed to be saved and re-located.  With much help form local Legion volunteers, the move was made in September 2020.  A small ceremony was held to re-dedicated the plaque.
This memorial is dedicated to those who fought and died in the Great War.  All names are of those who attended the school in this small town.  A brass plaque adorns the front of the memorial, while the back shows engraving of the major battles of the war.
