Fordwich

 

Location:  Huron County   N 43 52.193  W 81 01.864
On the west side of Patrick Street, just north of Water Street.
 

This one of many small towns in Ontario I had never heard of before tackling this project, and one of the many pleasant surprises I have found in my journey.  The memorial here in Fordwich represents the Township of Howich, and the men from this area who died in the Great War.  It was the sacrifices made by thousands of men from similar small villages across the country that gave Canada it great victories in the Great War.  The grateful citizens that remained, honoured these brave souls with beautiful statues and cenotaphs, carving their names in the stone to be remembered for ever more.  Brass plaques where later added to remember the names of those lost in the Second World War.  A WWI German trench mortar rests behind the memorial.
This cenotaph, so typical of those found in many small villages throughout Ontario, stands proudly today as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by so many.

Westwood

On Centre Line Road, east of County Road 38, beside the library.
 

Westwood is a small community within the township of Asphodel-Norwood.  The memorial is found beside the former Town Hall, now the library.  It consists of a single stone shaft, engraved with the names of the men from the former Asphodel Township, who served and died in the Great Wars.  The memorial was first erected by the township in 1920, making it one of the oldest memorials in Ontario.

Harriston

At the corner of Elora Street S. and Mill Street, in front of the public library.
 

A beautiful small town memorial with statue, erected in June 1921.  The memorial features the names of the men from the town of Harriston and Minto Township, who died during the World Wars.  The small parkette also features an Ontario Historical Plaque to tell the story of the founding of Harriston.  The names listed feature no ranks, as all men are equal in death.  So nice to see the memorial so well maintained, and the names still readable after so many years.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

In the boulevard at 1 Queen Street.

One of the most impressive and lasting memorials to be seen.  This wonderful clock tower is the centre-piece of the beautiful downtown area of Niagara-on-the-Lake.  The flowers and landscaping are second to none, this fitting tribute to the men of this region is a pleasant reminder of how remembrance and community spirit can work together to create something special.

Caledonia - Women's Memorial

On the east side of Argyle Street at the corner of Forfar Street, south shore of the Grand River.
 

A simple yet effective memorial to pay tribute to the brave women who have served in Canada's Armed Forces.  Located in a nicely landscaped park beside the mighty Grand River.

Victoria Harbour

In Cenotaph Parkette, at the corner of Albert Street and Richard Street.
 

Cenotaph Parkette is a very pleasant park dedicated to honouring those who have served their country, and those who have died in the World Wars. 
This is a two part memorial.  The first being the cenotaph itself, a stone wall with large white cross, erected in 1967 by Branch 523 of the Royal Canadian Legion.
The second part is a WWII anti-aircraft gun with two plaques dedicated to the local men who died in each of the World Wars.  Judging by the plaque from WWI, there must have been a different memorial in place here before the current configuration.  This is the first time I have seen the honoured names on a static artillery piece, rather than on the cenotaph itself.  The view of the village and harbour from this parkette is quite stunning.
