Tweed

Location:  Hastings County   N 44 28.392  W 77 18.500
In Tweed Memorial Park, east side of Victoria Street S (Highway 37), at the south end of town.
 

The Memorial Park in Tweed is host to two beautiful memorials.
The first and more traditional is the standard granite cenotaph dedicated to those who gave their lives in the two World Wars.  The names of the men lost are engraved in the base of the memorial, and the Korean War is also recognized, although no local men where lost in that war.
The second and most recent memorial is dedicated to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan.  The statue is that of a baying wolf, carved from local white marlbe, mounted on a base of granite.  The statue was carved and donated by Paul E. Shier, a noted local carver.  This memorial was made even more touching during my visit, by the photos and remembrance of a local soldier and hero, Pte. Micheal Bruce Freeman, who was killed in Afghanistan on December 26th, 2008 by a roadside bomb.  A fitting reminder that our local heroes are still paying the price for our freedom, one hundred years after the Great War.
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 428 sponsors both of these memorials and leads the community in honouring our fallen soldiers and all those who have served.

CANADA'S SOLDIERS IN AFGHANISTAN

This memorial is erected to honour
Canada's soldiers who gave their lives in
the service of peace in Afghanistan

The sculpture of "The Guardian"
was rendered by Paul E. Shier
who generously presented it to the
Municipality of Tweed to stand as a
reminder to all Canadians of the
sacrifice made by members
of the Canadian Forces.
