On the median between St. Philippe Street and Telegraph Road. Across the road from St. Victor Church.
Alfred is a predominately French speaking village founded in 1871. Known for its agricultural college as well as being the french fry capital of Canada, this small village was also home to several brave soldiers of the World Wars. The names of those who served appear on the cenotaph built in a long park situated on a median along the main street. The cenotaph consist of several parts, a cross which represents the Catholic Franco-Ontarian heritage of the region adorned with three fluer-dis-lis to remember the French language spoken here, three flagpoles with the Ontario, Canadian, and Franco-Ontario flags, a black marble stone which acts as the main part of the cenotaph, and a tall sign-type plaque with the names of those who served. Several benches provide a calm place to rest and reflect on the sacrifice made by all who died and by those who returned broken and pained.
*Special thank you to Louise Bellec for the photos and very helpful information.
