Morewood

Location:  United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.
N 45.177618    W 75.285478

North side of Main St. at Mill St.

This imposing monument surrounded by a wrought iron fence and a brick path is located, I would say at the busiest intersection of a very small community. Perfect area to erect a monument to our fallen soldiers to attract any passers-by who are looking for memorials or anything else that is historical.  Apparently, a local newspaper "La Nouvelle" wrote that this cenotaph is one of the most prominent war memorials in rural Eastern Ontario.

A local historian and author, Carol Goddard recently published a book called "The Morewood War Memorial" whose portions of all book sales will go towards future care and maintenance of the cenotaph. The book, geared for children, is also a reminder for people of all ages about the great sacrifices made by others who fought and died for our freedom. Her work focuses on the Morewood Memorial construction.

The Morewood Monument, funded by locals, was constructed in 1920 and dedicated July 6 1921. The lifesize statue, a representation of Captain Ernest J. Glasgow was paid by the Glasgow family and is a work from the internationally known physician, educator, sculptor, athlete, soldier and scouter Robert Tait McKenzie.

***Once again, a big thanks to Louise B. for the great photos and description.
