Location: Renfrew County

Located in Veterans Memorial Park, 30 Pembroke Street (Highway 17).
Before the 1850's the easiest way from
Pembroke to Ottawa was the Ottawa river and because of some rapids near Portage
du Fort a land road was needed. In 1849 Jason Gould built a road that came to
be known as Goulds Landing which later was renamed Coben after Richard Cobden a
member of British Parliament whom Gould admired.
Cobden which was amalgamated with the
village of Beachburg, the Township of Ross and the Towship of Westmeath to form
the Township of Whitewater Region in 2001. This is also an historical area as it is
around Cobden that Samuel de Champlain met the Algonkin chief Nibachis and also
in this area that Champlain lost his astrolabe which was found 254 years later. An Ontario Historical Plaque is also found here to tell this story.
The beautiful and scenic Veteran's
Memorial Park is situated in Cobden along the Trans Canada Highway also known
as Highway 17. It is also a great spot for travelers to rest, as it offers
also picnic tables, a small playground for children, a beach and for a small
fee you can do some camping. It is very easy to find the park as it displays a
giant Canadian flag floating in the wind, and a visitors centre.
2 of the 3 cenotaphs that Cobden has
are in the Veteran's Memorial Park and are situated at each end of the park.
This beautiful black granite stele on a
2-tier base which is dedicated to the brave men and women of Cobden and district
is located on the east side of the park. (right)
