Elmira

Location:  Waterloo Region     N 43 35.676   W -80 33.618
In the Memorial Park at 105 Arthur Street S., at Memorial Avenue.

This memorial was first unveiled in August 1923 to honour the names of the local heroes who died in the Great War.  Standing fifteen feet tall with its sculpture of Italian marble, the memorial underwent a few changes over the years.  In 1957, the names of those lost in World War II where added to the memorial, and similarly in 1988 a stone was added to recognize the Korean War.
A major change to the cenotaph occurred in 2009, when the statue was replaced with a bronze replica designed by local artist Timothy Schmalz.  Over the years, weathering and vandalism had aged the original statue and a replacement was needed.  This original marble statue now resides on display inside the Woolwich Memorial Centre, in a glass case for all to see.  The statue was re-dedicated in its new home in October 2012.
I find it very refreshing to see a local memorial still cherished after all these years, still upgraded and cared for by a loving community that gave its young men for the price of freedom and victory.  Well done Elmira.
Lest We Forget.
