At the northwest corner of Elgin Mills Road and McCowan road, in the Town of Markham.
I found this wonderful memorial completely by accident. This busy intersection is now part of an expanding Town of Markham, but at one time would have been a very small and very rural farming village. The area was first settled in the early 1800's by United Empire Loyalists, as well as immigrants of German descent, who came by way of Pennsylvania. The United Church and cemetery was established in 1847, and the men from this congregation who served during the World Wars are remembered by stone plaques embedded into the sides of the church, and some are buried in the cemetery. This as such an amazing contribution from such a tiny community, one that no longer exists except within the confines of the churchyard. I am not sure if the church is still in use, however the grounds are well kept and tidy.
