Burlington - Naval Memorial Monument

Along the Waterfront Trail in Spencer Smith Park, south side of Lakeshore Road.

 

The Royal Canadian Naval Ships Memorial Monument, which faces Lake Ontario at Spencer Smith Park, honours the memory of the Canadian ships and sailors that served during the Second World War.  The memorial was unveiled May 14th, 1995
The cairn and ships' remembrance wall is Cambrian Black granite, inscribed with the names of all the 527 Warships that served during World War II in the Royal Canadian Navy under the white ensign, and of the 370 merchant ships that sailed under the red duster of the Canadian Merchant Navy. The ships' names are in gold, the crests are carved and in full colour.  A young sailor statue stands atop the memorial, giving a salute to all those who served on these ships. The ship's bell from HMCS Burlington is also proudly displayed in this wonderful monument.
During the war the Royal Canadian Navy was the third largest in the world with 577 ships. Canada lost 2,024 naval personnel and 21 warships during the conflict, as well as 1,466 merchant seamen and 75 ships of the Canadian Merchant Navy.
