Oakland

 

Location:  Brant County     N 43 03.078   W -80 20.293

In front of the Legion, 72 King Street North.

 

This memorial is unique in that the sculpture is in the form of the shape of Canada.  Situated in front of the Royal Canadian Legion South Brant Branch #463, the memorial pays tribute to those who gave, with a metal plaque featuring the words of the famous poem "The Silence".   No wars or names of those lost are found on this monument, simply a thought of Remembrance.

An interesting fact, the last time Canada fought on its' own soil against a foreign power was in the County of Brant?  It's true...Malcolm Mills, which lies within the village of Oakland, was the site of the last battle between the American and British troops on Canadian soil in the War of 1812.

 I have never seen another memorial in this style, making the small farming village of Oakland a place to remember in so many ways.  Another little treat to be found here is the captured German machine gun on display behind the monument.
