Vanier is a historically francophone area in the proximity of downtown Ottawa. In 1908, 3 communities ( Janeville, Clarkstown, Clandeboye) formed the village of Eastview which became a town in 1913 then a city in 1963. In 1969 Eastview was renamed Cite de Vanier in honour of Governor General Georges P. Vanier. Vanier was amalgamated into Ottawa in 2001. Although the cenotaph was never renamed Vanier cenotaph, from the time Eastview changed its name, it was always known as the Vanier cenotaph.
This cenotaph honouring local men who
gave their lives, is located in a small triangular shape park (if you can call
it as such) bordered by Marier Ave., Dagmar Ave. and Hannah St. The front of
the monument is facing Dagmar and Hannah. A walkway leads to the front and on
each side a bench. The monument resting on a pedestal nicely decorated by
plants around it, is flanked by the Royal Canadian flag, Canadian flag and
Ontario flag.
You will notice beside each name, the
age when they died. How sad that all these soldiers had a whole life ahead of
them, cut short by war.
***Special thanks once again to fellow researcher Louise Bellec for the photos and description.
