Edenvale - Glengarry Landing

 

Location:  Simcoe County, Springwater Township   N 44° 27.051 W 079° 54.071                             Located on the north side of Highway 26, just west of Edenvale, at the entrance to Edenvale Conservation Area.

A key spot in the 1814 campaign of the War of 1812, now a National Historic Site, Glengarry Landing was the starting point for a flotilla of the Glengarry Light Infantry to make important advances in the west.  The flotilla was led by Lt.-Col. Robert McDouall (March, 1774 – 15 November 1848) was a Scottish-born officer in the British Army, who saw much action during the Napoleonic Wars and the Anglo-America War of 1812. He is best known for serving as the commandant of Fort Mackinac from 1814 until the end of the War of 1812.

At the forks of the Nottawasaga River, Lt.-Col. Robert 
McDouall, Glengarry Light Infantry, built the flotilla of boats 
with which he effected the relief of the British garrison at Fort 
Michilimackinac, in May 1814. He then organized a second 
expedition which, on 19th July, captured Prairie du Chien, 
on the Mississippi.
