Spencerville

Location:  United Counties of Leeds and Grenville
N  44 50.546   W 75 32.864
On Centre Street, in front of the Township office.

Spencerville is a picturesque village featuring several historical old buildings and a friendly atmosphere.  The memorial is a tribute to the honour of the heroes of the Township of Edwardsburg.  The granite stele and statue stands proudly in front of the Township office.  The long list of names engraved on this monument is impressive from a small farming community, a theme we see across the country from villages and hamlets providing some of the bravest soldiers in the war.
The names have been engraved into the granite and then highlighted by embedding the engravings with lead, which at the time lent to the belief that this would perpetuate the longevity of the monument.  Unfortunately this makes the names very difficult to read decades later.
Originally erected to honour those who died in World War I, it was further updated with the names of those lost in World War II, and later to recognize the sacrifices of Korea and Peacekeeping.
A wonderful memorial of remembrance to carry on the names of those who never returned.
