Peterborough

Location:  Peterborough County     N 44 18.537   W 78 19.273
In Confederation Park, 501 George Street North.

On December 11, 1920, the first meeting of the Citizen's Memorial Committee was held. During a public meeting on December 17, 1920, a design by Walter S. Allward was submitted and approved. Walter S. Allward had the honour of being chosen by the Canadian Government to execute the Vimy Ridge Memorial in France. Since this interfered with the Peterborough contract, Allward secured the assistance of an eminent English sculptor, Mr. Bayes, to assist in carrying out the original design.
On October 10, 1927, the tender of Creber Brothers for the granite work of the memorial was accepted while the committee was still securing a complete list of the war dead of Peterborough. Excavation began and the cement work started on May 28, 1928. The unveiling and dedication was held on June 30, 1929. This memorial was originally constructed in what was known as Central Park, now known as Confederation Park on George Street in Peterborough, Ontario. This site was selected because of its central location and more importantly, as a sentiment to the fact that many of the soldiers started and returned at that location, on their "great adventure". The carved names on the plaques have become illegible over the years. The honour roll in the City Hall remained the only list of Peterborough's heroes.
From 1977 to 1981, the veterans group refurbished and added name plaques in Operation Cenotaph. A third monument was unveiled on June 18, 1967 by the ex-servicewomen's branch 452 of the Royal Canadian Legion. A rededication ceremony took place on Sunday, June 24, 1979 at 2 pm where new name plaques were unveiled. At this time, the names of war dead from the Second World War and from the Korean Conflict were added to the Cenotaph. The veterans also organized the restoration of the statues in 1993-94 by Craig Johnson Restoration Ltd. The Peterborough chapter of Ontario Electrical League donated new lighting in June 1995.
The Cenotaph sits on a circular, stepped base made of white granite. The pedestals for each of the two bronze figures are also of white granite, the west pedestal being carved on the front and back with the names of war victims from World War I. The four plaques placed over the inside of the western pedestal are of bronze and the names of all Peterborough war dead of the World Wars and the Korean Conflict are inscribed on them in raised gold lettering. A fifth plaque on the eastern side of the east pedestal remains as a dedication. Above the pedestals are two bronze figures of heroic dimensions, one representing the enemy full of rage and fury and the other of a heroic knight representing Canadian chivalry.
The monument erected by the ex-servicewomen has a rectangular base of rough white granite, a rectangular pedestal of smooth white granite and a polished monument of red granite in the shape of the City Honour Book. There is an inscription on the eastern side of the pedestal.
**Thank you to Veterans Affairs Canada for the above description: http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/memorials/national-inventory-canadian-memorials/details/5511

On the back of the memorial are panels of black granite with the names of all from this city who have served.  This is a beautiful memorial and should be seen by all, the sculptures are quite impressive, as is the long list of names of those who paid the ultimate price.
