Picton

Location:  Prince Edward County  N 44 00.331  W 077 08.707
On the south-west corner of Main Street (Highway 33) and Ferguson Street (Chapel Street).

This memorial was originally posted in January 2013, but due to photo storage issues, it is being re-posted and updated.

The first steps to provide a memorial to the dead of the First World War were taken by the Prince Edward Old Boys Association. This association had been formed in 1901 by County men who had moved away, especially to Toronto, and wanted to maintain their links to the County. They got other patriotic groups, especially the Great War Veterans Association, involved in March of 1920 and proposed the erection of Memorial Gates at the Fairgrounds, but could not get agreement. In May, 1920, a Prince Edward County Memorial Committee was formed consisting of representatives from the Great War Veterans Association, the Prince Edward County Old Boys Association, The Prince Edward County Agricultural Society, and others. This committee was to make a recommendation to the County Council. Eventually, after a proposal to build a memorial hall was turned down, it was agreed to have a monument erected. In the meantime, the Old Boys apparently went ahead and erected War Memorial Gates and a fence on their own on the Prince Edward Agricultural Society Grounds before the monument was built. These gates and the fence were removed only a few short years ago and replaced with a chain link fence. The pedestrian gate and the ticket office with the Old Boys sign is still there. The work of erecting the monument was completed on Monday, September 20, 1920. The monument was unveiled the next day, Tuesday, September 21, 1920. The Picton War Memorial was dedicated to the memory of the veterans who died in the First World War. In November 1956 it was re-dedicated to honour the veterans who died in the Second World War with the addition of an alter. Later a tribute to the Veterans of the Korean War was added to the Memorial.
