Port Credit

Location:  Peel Region     N 43.55323   W -79.58709
Corner of Stavebank Road and Park Street East, in Cenotaph Park.

This memorial was erected in 1925, to honour the men from this community who lost their lives in the Great War.  It was further updated in 1946 and 1983 to include the names of those lost in World War II and Korea.  It was designed and constructed by Louis Temporale, who received the Order of Canada for his master craftsmanship in stone masonry.  Theoctagonal shaped memorial is capped by a tall white cross emblazoned with a sword.
At the time of the World Wars, Port Credit was a quiet village along the shores of Lake Ontario, before being gobbled up by the mass of urban sprawl we now know as Mississauga, in 1974.  The men who went to war and fought for King and country would never know the fate of their humble hometown.   Today, the port at the mouth of the Credit River is used mostly for recreational boating.  The downtown section of Port Credit remains a historical district.  Across the road from Cenotaph Park, can be found Memorial Park.

THOSE WHOM THIS MEMORIAL
COMMEMORATES WERE NUMBERED
AMONG THOSE WHO, AT THE CALL
OF KING AND COUNTRY,  LEFT
ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM,
ENDURED HARDNESS, FACED DANGER,
AND FINALLY PASSED OUT OF
THE SIGHT OF MEN BY THE PATH
OF DUTY AND SELF-SACRIFICE,
GIVING UP THEIR OWN LIVES, THAT
OTHERS MAY LIVE IN FREEDOM.

LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER
SEE TO IT THAT THEIR NAMES
BE NOT FORGOTTEN.
