Newtonville

Location:  Durham Region     N 43 56.330   W 78 29.580
On the north-east corner of Highway 2 and Newtonville Road.

Erected in 1902 to honour the memory of Captain W.P.K. Milligan, who was killed in battle in South Africa.  The name of this local hero is engraved into the granite obelisk, and above his name is the crest of the Durham Regiment, later known as the Midland regiment.
I have provided a historic photo of the unveiling of this monument from Victoria Day in 1902.  You can see the crowds of people who came out to honour and pay their respects to this brave soldier.  You will also notice that the base of the monument is very different than is seen today.  In 1943 a traffic accident damaged the original base, which was replaced with a cement base and relocated in Memorial Garden.  The memorial was restored once again in 1980, and is currently under the watch of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #178  and the Town of Clarington.
The left side of the memorial features two plaques dedicated to men lost in the World Wars.

Zorra Township

Location:  Oxford County     N 43 02.681   W 80 55.448
In front of the the Zorra Township offices, at the corner of 19th Line and 27th Line.

This memorial is dedicated to the brave men of North Oxford, now Zorra Township.  Originally erected with the names of those lost in the First World War, the names of those lost in the Second World War were added later.  The statue features a marble soldier typical of many WWI statues of the time.  The memorial was moved from Dickson's Corner to its present location.

A wonderful website and resource has been created to honour the heroes of Zorra, from the 1860's to present day.  I suggest spending several minutes here to find out more about the names engraved on this beautiful cenotaph.    http://www.heroesofzorra.ca/

Hamilton - Mt. Hope LAV

Location:  City of Hamilton     N 43 09.605   W 79 55.567
Off of Airport Road, at the Hamilton International Airport.

This memorial is a tribute to the mission in Afghanistan, and also to local soldiers who have lost their lives in the face of duty.  The LAV is decorated with a plaque to acknowledge the details of the mission.  A granite stone beside the vehicle list those who are responsible for this memorial, including local military regiments, a motorcycle club, and the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.  The memorial is found on the grounds of the Warplane museum, so it is a great place to visit to honour those who served in Afghanistan and also to view the great museum and wonderful aircraft on display, including the highly-prized Lancaster Bomber.
At the front of the LAV vehicle are smaller individual stone dedicated to Canadian Forces personnel who lost their lives in the course of duty.
There are plans to have several of these displays at various towns across Canada, this is the first one I have seen and I was impressed with the display.

Spencerville

Location:  United Counties of Leeds and Grenville
N  44 50.546   W 75 32.864
On Centre Street, in front of the Township office.

Spencerville is a picturesque village featuring several historical old buildings and a friendly atmosphere.  The memorial is a tribute to the honour of the heroes of the Township of Edwardsburg.  The granite stele and statue stands proudly in front of the Township office.  The long list of names engraved on this monument is impressive from a small farming community, a theme we see across the country from villages and hamlets providing some of the bravest soldiers in the war.
The names have been engraved into the granite and then highlighted by embedding the engravings with lead, which at the time lent to the belief that this would perpetuate the longevity of the monument.  Unfortunately this makes the names very difficult to read decades later.
Originally erected to honour those who died in World War I, it was further updated with the names of those lost in World War II, and later to recognize the sacrifices of Korea and Peacekeeping.
A wonderful memorial of remembrance to carry on the names of those who never returned.
