Kakabeka Falls

Location:  Thunder Bay District     N 48.38734   W -89.59647

On the east side of Highway 17 (Trans Canada Highway), 2 kilometres south of town.  Address is 4556 Hwy. 17.

This memorial proudly stands in front of the Royal Canadian legion Branch 225, on the outskirts of Kakabeka Falls.  The village is known for its magnificent waterfalls, located in the Provincial Park of the same name.  The memorial, a single piece of red granite, lists the names of the major conflicts that the Canadian Forces have faced during the twentieth century, along with the crests of the Legion and all major branches of the services, including the Merchant Marine.  A pair of M113 armoured personnel carriers stand guard on each side of the memorial, giving a tremendous visual effect for anyone passing by this busy Legion.

Plattsville

Location:  Oxford County     N 43.30508   W -80.61709

80 Mill Street East, between the Public School and the arena.

The Plattsville Memorial Park was established at this location in 1958, consisting of an impressive park gate and stone pillars, along with a pair of more recent signs.  The memorial was originally unveiled in 1921 but eventually moved to the Memorial Park.  The names of those lost in the World Wars are forever remembered on a sign attached to a cobblestone pillar, while the plaques on the gates give a more general respect to all who served.  A more recent addition is a sign post dedicated to a local soldier lost in the Afghanistan War.  A very nice and fitting tribute to honour the brave heroes of this small farming community.

Grafton

Location:  Northumberland County     N 43.99106   W -78.03092

On the north side of County Road 2, in front of the Haldimand Memorial Arena.

This memorial, of grey granite, was erected by the Township of Haldimand to remember those who laid down their lives in the name of peace.  The Honour Roll lists the names of those who fell while preserving the peace, as well as those who served.  It includes both World Wars, Korea and more recently Afghanistan.  The memorial was recently re-dedicated to include the war in Afghanistan and sadly one of our fallen.  The village of Grafton and the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion take great pride in honouring the fallen and all those who have served.

Brockville - Memorial Civic Centre

Location:  United Counties of Leeds and Grenville

N 44.60986   W -75.69988

100 Magedoma Boulevard, beside St. Lawrence College.

This memorial is a bronze Roll of Honor plaque found inside the Brockville Memorial Civic Centre, home to an 1800 seat arena,  large community hall and recreation facilities.   This building was constructed in 1981, but it is the second facility to bear the name, the previous building was located on Gilmour Street.  The first Memorial Centre was started soon after World War II and finally opened in 1951.  Unfortunately the ground that the Memorial Centre was built on was unstable and damage to the building was becoming apparent. In January of 1978, after a snow storm, the roof collapsed. It was decided that the best course of action was to tear down what was left of the building.

The current Memorial Civic Centre serves the community year-round with a busy arena in the winter and festivals throughout the summer months.

The Roll of Honor plaque was first installed in the original building and then moved here when this centre was opened in 1981.  This is the first thing everyone sees when they step inside the Memorial Civic Centre.  The names of those brave men who died in the two World Wars are forever remembered on this historic plaque.

*Thank you to Louise Bellec for the photos.
