Midland

Location:  N 44° 44.699 W 079° 52.887  On the west side of King Street, at the entrance to the curling rink and community centre.

In 1901, the Town of Midland purchased 10 acres of land to be used for a park area. Mr. William Finlayson, a First World War veteran, approached the Town on December 26, 1926 about keeping monies aside for a memorial to be built on this site. The Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.) donated the other half of the monies required to complete the memorial. It was completed and installed in spring of 1927 and the official unveiling was held June 1, 1927. The memorial is the location that Royal Canadian Legion Branch 80 holds its ceremonies. This memorial is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War.  Like many memorials built just after the first world war, this one is showing deterioration. The lettering of names is wearing off from weathering. In May 2006 Midland Town Council began planning for refurbishment of this 57 year old monument.
