Port Hope

Location:  Northumberland County   N 43 56.541  W 78 17.568
On the corner of Queen Street and Augusta Street.

This tall and impressive granite cenotaph was originally erected in 1926 by the Col. Arthur Williams Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.).  On the front are inscribed the names of the local men who died in the Great War, and the names of the historic battles are carved in the shaft for all to remember.  Statues of peace adorn the memorial, looking out for the souls lost in the horrific battles.
The names of those lost in World War II were added later, as was a small bronze plaque to acknowledge the Korean War.
I was taken by the beauty of this cenotaph and the surrounding landscaping, creating a wonderful area of remembrance and honour.  This memorial would put to shame many of those found in much larger communities.  Several other small memorials can also be found nearby, honouring the Dieppe raid, the North-West Rebellion, and a captured German artillery piece.

Port Hope - Dieppe Memorial

Location:  Northumberland County  N 43° 56.938 W 078° 17.580
In front of City Hall, 56 Queen Street.

Erected by the Royal Canadian Legion, the Royal Regiment of Canada, and Ron Reynolds, in memory of the bloody disaster of the raid on Dieppe.  Hundreds of Canadian lives where lost on the raid, which recently unearthed history suggests was staged as a diversion to capture an Enigma code machine from a ship in the Dieppe harbour.  The capture of the code machine was key to intercepting German messages and orders in the Second World War, and would have given the Allies a huge advantage at the time, but the raid was unsuccessful not only in it's mission of capturing the Enigma, but also in the sacrifices of so many young lives.

The memorial is fashioned as a brick/stone wall with two stone plates containing the engraved words of remembrance.  A small plaque beside the wall pays tribute to the men who died on the beaches of Dieppe, August 19th, 1942.

Location:  Simcoe County   N 44 30.271  W 80 12.102
In front of the Legion, 490 Ontario Street.

It is hard to miss the vibrant Branch #63 of the Royal Canadian Legion.  In front of the Legion is F-96 Starfire fighter, a Sherman tank, and a large ship's anchor.  Closer to the building are two cannons from the War of 1812.  It is here, near the entrance, you will find a memorial plaque mounted on a large piece of granite.  Thank you to the Legion for erecting this memorial in 1995, and for carrying on the tradition of Remembrance of those who came before us.  Lest We Forget.

Collingwood

Location:  Simcoe County   N 44 30.153  W 80 12.855
In front of the town museum at 45 St. Paul Street.

The Collingwood cenotaph is a beautiful example of the dedication of a small town to commemorate those who volunteered to serve their country and lay down their lives for the greater good.  The memorial rests in front of the Collingwood Museum/Chamber of Commerce.  Construction began in 1922, and the cenotaph was unveiled in a public dedication in August of 1923.  The Cenotaph was designed by local contractor Charles Henry Lawrence MacDonald, who used his brother Fred as a model for the soldier. A concrete slab supports a granite base and stations a 16 foot bronze figure of a First World War Canadian soldier in uniform looking west to St. Paul Street. The soldier holds a bugle to his lips with his right hand, left arm at his side, prepared to play "The Last Post", which is inscribed immediately below the figure.  In 1960 granite "wings" flanking the original Cenotaph were installed and commemorate 52 Collingwood men who died in the Second World War. It was in 1982, that the Korean War Veterans were acknowledged on the wings.
There is also a World War I artillery piece on the grounds of the park, as well as a plaque honouring the Merchant Marine service.
