Guelph
Location: Wellington County N 43.5479739 W -80.2507725
At the corner of Woolwich and Wyndham Streets.
The Guelph War Memorial featuring a 29' high bronze sculpture by Alfred Howell was unveiled 3 July 1927. It was constructed of Stansted granite and bronze. The sculpture's flags with helmet & olives with palm leaves suggest peace and victory. The bronze plaques lists the Honour Roll of the brave heroes who died during the Wars. Guelph is also the home of Col. John McCrae, who wrote the famous poem In Flanders Fields, which is also featured on this memorial. A splendid memorial, a place of honour and a lasting memory to all who served and endured.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
IN FLANDERS FIELDS THE POPPIES BLOW
BETWEEN THE CROSSES, ROW ON ROW,
THAT MARK OUR PLACE, AND IN THE SKY
THE LARKS STILL BRAVELY SINGING, FLY
SCARCE HEARD AMIDST THE GUNS BELOW
WE ARE THE DEAD, SHORT DAYS AGO
WE LIVED, FELT DAWN, SAW SUNSET GLOW,
LOVED, AND WERE LOVED, AND NOW WE LIE
IN FLANDERS FIELDS.
TAKE UP OUR QUARREL WITH THE FOE:
TO YOU FROM FAILING HANDS WE THROW
THE TORCH, BE YOURS TO HOLD IT HIGH.
IF YE BREAK FAITH WITH US WHO DIE
WE SHALL NOT SLEEP, THOUGH POPPIES GROW
IN FLANDERS FIELDS
THE INTERNATIONALLY FAMOUS LINES WRITTEN AT YPRES
3 MAY 1915, BY COL. JOHN MCcRAE, SOLDIER, PHYSICIAN, POET,
BORN GUELPH, CANADA, NOV 1872. DIED IN FRANCE 1918.
