Galt

Location:  Waterloo Region   N 43 21.540   W 80 19.100
In the Queen's Square, at the corner of Main Street and Grand Avenue.

A beautiful memorial unveiled to over 10,000 people in November of 1930.   The cenotaph was designed by Miss Francis Loring, of Toronto, one of the top Canadian sculptors of the day.  "The symbolism of the cenotaph is best described by Miss Loring herself. "Out of a large central stone merges the heroic figure of "Victory" on one side and a mourning figure of "Peace" on the opposite side. This central block is supported at either end by two pylons on which are carved the names of those whose sacrifice upheld Victory and made Peace possible. The symbolic figure of "Victory" stands leaning on the Sword of Sacrifice. He looks to the future and speaks: To them all honour Guard ye their victory On the opposite side the woman also speaks. She is "Peace". Peace mourning for great is the sacrifice these her sons have made that Peace might endure. She leans with one hand on the shield, for it is through battle that they achieved peace. And with the other hand she offers them the laurel branch that their sacrifice may be ever glorified."

The 239 names of those men from Galt who gave their lives in the First World War are engraved on the sides of the memorial, while a further 137 names of those lost in the Second World War are engraved in the front.

In 1991, the cenotaph underwent some needed renovations, as well a subsequent memorial was also added to include the names of those lost since 1954.  The second memorial stands in front of the main cenotaph, amidst the Garden of Remembrance.

The downtown area of Galt is one of the most beautiful in all of Ontario, best visited on a warm summer day.  My impression felt as though I was strolling the streets and canals of an old European city.  The Queen's Square area adds to the flavour of this scenic city.
