Grantham Township

Location:  Niagara Region     N 43.16187   W -79.20324

In the north section of Victoria Lawn Cemetery, 480 Queenston Street, St. Catharines.

Grantham Township was formerly known as a geographic township on the Niagara Peninsula in Upper Canada, later Ontario. In 1961, part of it was amalgamated into the city of St. Catharines. In 1970, the remaining portion was amalgamated into the new Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.  This memorial stands proudly in the Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St. Catharines.  All of the names listed on this cenotaph knew this area as Grantham Township and as such, I will list it as Grantham Township, in their honour.

This memorial was dedicated to the citizens of the Township of Grantham who were killed in the First World War and was erected by the Township of Grantham. A plaque for the Second World War was unveiled on June 7, 1954. Plaques were later added for the Korean War and Afghanistan.  The tall granite cenotaph is the showcase for this part of the cemetery that holds a veteran's plot and three other smaller memorials in the vicinity.  The township is all but forgotten in our modern day history, but the names of the brave souls who died with Grantham Township as their home will live on in remembrance.
