Castleton

 

Location:  Northumberland County     N 44 05.654   W 77 56.139
On the corner of Spring Street and Norway Street.
 

This memorial was unveiled in August 1920, by the Castleton Women's Institute and the Municipality of Cramahe Township.  Today, the Remembrance Day Ceremonies are attended by members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 380 of Warkworth, and by 8 Wing of CFB Trenton.
During the years of the First World War, the Women's Institute was instrumental in raising funds for the memorial, as well as sending care packages to soldiers overseas.  Knitted socks seem to be a common item sent to the troops.
The names of those lost from The Great War appear on the front of the memorial, while those lost in the Second World War were later added on the back.  Something I have not seen before is the names from WWI are listed under "Killed in Action" and "Died of Wounds", which seems an odd distinction for a cenotaph.
Four round concrete balls are laid in the ground in front of the granite monument.  These balls list the WWI battles of Courcelette, Mons, Ypres and Vimy Ridge.

Markdale

 
Location:  Grey County     N 44 19.049   W 80 33.972
At the corner of Main Street West and Argyle Street, on the grounds of the Markdale Hospital.

This memorial was first erected in 1923, in the Markdale Public Cemetery.  The three large stone plaques listed the names of the 142 brave locals citizens who fought in the Great War, and the 33 brave souls who paid the supreme sacrifice. 
In 1971, the memorial was relocated within the cemetery to place of lesser prominence and the local members of the Royal Canadian Legion felt this was disrespectful.  The three stones plaques where removed and stored at the legion hall.  A smaller brass plaque was created and erected in the town library, but with the creation of a new library, the brass plaque was removed and stored in the basement. 
The Legion and veterans fought to have their memorial restored to a place of honour, and in 1979, property was granted on the grounds of the Markdale Hospital.  A new memorial was created at this site to honour the heroes of the World Wars, and in 1983, the three original stone plaques where added to the new memorial, to honour the names of those who served and died in both World Wars.  The names of those lost in World War II added shortly after this time.  The Markdale Horticultural Society maintains the flower beds around the memorial.
A very nice memorial plagued by political decisions of the past, now pays honour to those soldiers from the past, and thanks also to the diligence of the Legion to carry on and do what's right.

Woodstock

At the corner of Graham Street and Buller Street,in Victoria Park.
 
This beautiful memorial was erected in 1925 by the citizens of  Woodstock and the local Havelock Chapter I.O.D.E.  Originally it listed the names of those lost in the Great War, then was updated to add those lost in World War II and Korea.  A more recent update and refurbishment added the name of a young soldier lost in Afghanistan, and also recognized the efforts of peacekeeping.  This new update also covered the original engraved names on the stone memorial with black granite stone with all names engraved once again. The monument was designed and built by Coeur de Lion MacCarthy, artist-sculptor of Montreal.
A second memorial was added in April 2015 to recognize the efforts of those in the Afghanistan War.  A local soldier, Pte. Tyler William Todd, age 26, was killed while on patrol in Afghanistan.  A small plaque on the memorial pays everlasting tribute to the loss of this young man.
This is one of the most beautiful memorials in Ontario, the design and the location are a fine tribute to the men of this area who made the supreme sacrifice.

Wroxeter

In the Wroxeter Cemetery, 43172 Harriston Road, east of the village.
 
This memorial was erected to honour those from the community who died in the Great War.  The black granite shaft has the names of the brave men forever engraved in the stone.  Wroxeter is an interesting place to visit.  One hundred years ago the village was a growing concern with several hotels, industries, stores and a railway.  The unique layout of the downtown are is very picturesque.  Nowadays the town is much smaller, most of the businesses left along with the railway.  The population is now around half of what it was during the glory days.

Wardsville

Location:  Middlesex County     N 42 39.414   W 81 45.345
At the edge of Little Kin Park, corner of Church Street and Wellington Street.
 
This memorial was moved to its current location in 2001.  The original location was at the Wardsville Community Centre, until that property was sold.  The memorial was rebuilt here using the original plaque.
Wardsville was named after George Ward (1743-1837), a distinguished veteran of the War of 1812.

In front of the Municipal Offices, 30 Lewis Street.

This is a rather strange memorial, erected in 1993.  The inscription on the front of the memorial is very ambiguous and vague as to who they are honouring, while the remainder of the memorial seems dedicated to all branches of the military, yet only mentions the Special Forces and Airborne units specifically.  No names are listed, no local ties or wars are remembered.  I suppose this is better than nothing, but disappointing in my mind, especially considering the vast local military history found nearby.  Lest We Forget.
