Kitchener - C.W.A.C.

Location:  Waterloo Region   N 43 26.892  W 080 28.185
In front of the Kitchener Armoury, at 350 East Avenue.

On May 5, 2001, the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, Her Honour Mrs. Hillary Weston unveiled the Canadian Women's Army Corps Memorial Monument. This memorial honours the women who served in the C.W.A.C. between 1941 and 1946. It also lists those who died while on service. The monument has a 6'4" high bronze figure which depicts a young C.W.A.C. member as she might have looked when "stepping out" on a pass in town during her basic training course at the wartime Kitchener Training Centre. The unveiling was attended by some 1,500 C.W.A.C. veterans and relatives, the Mayor of Kitchener, the local Member of Parliament, Minister of National Defence representative, Chief of Defence Staff representative, the sculptor (André Gauthier of Orleans, Ontario) and the Artcast Inc. Foundry representatives.

  1. I had the privledge of having an ex CWAC work for me a few years ago. One day I heard voices raised in the office next door and, thinking that perhaps she might like a man to appear, I stuck my head around the corner. Just as I did she reared up to her 5'0", stuck her finger in the guys face and said " You figure out what lie you're gonna tell, and I'll write it down". She was 10' tall at that moment.

  2. My mother served in the CWAC and I have a photocopy of a picture of her with two other ladies all in uniform outside a building identified as Canadian Womens Army Corps B Command Quarters. Mom also appeared in the November 27, 1943 issue of The Star Weekly holding a bomb. Anyone know how I can find out more about mom's career?
