Cooper

Location:  Hastings County     N 44.63469   W -77.46958

In the cemetery, on the west side of Cooper Road (County Road 12), just north of Barry Road.

This memorial is another fine example of finding a cenotaph in a place that I didn't even know existed.  Cooper is a small hamlet on the edge of the Canadian Shield.  There are some farms located sporadically around this very rural area and its a weekend getaway to cottagers.  There are no stores or much of anything in the area, just a crossroads and a few houses.

The memorial itself is a tall red granite shaft with a bust of a typical WWI soldier at the top.  The names of those lost in the World Wars are engraved in the granite, six in WWI and one from WWII.  The cemetery is rather large considering the size of the community, it has many gravestones from the first settlers to present day, and several military style grave markers to remember those who proudly served and are buried here.

Lunenburg

Location:  United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry

N 45.06053   W -74.96037

On the west side of County Road 12, about 1 km north of the village, in Memorial Hill Cemetery.

This memorial proudly stands in Memorial Hill Cemetery.  It lists the names of the five local heroes who died in the First World War.  No other wars or conflicts are mentioned.  The names are extremely difficult to read in the grey granite stone, but my research associate Louise made several trips to document and photograph the site for accuracy.  Accompanying the memorial is a WWI artillery piece and also a bench for those who wish to sit and remember the fallen.  We can find very little information in relation to the origin of this beautiful memorial.  Lunenburg is small agricultural village with little written about its history.  There is something very special, and one of the reasons I started this project many years ago, about finding these touching memorials in small villages that we didn't even know existed, yet they contributed so much to the greater cause of our freedom.

Richmond

Location:  City of Ottawa

N 45.194292  W 75.838257

Southeast corner of Perth and McBean St.

Richmond Ontario, now part of Ottawa since the amalgamation, is 36km away from the downtown core. Founded in 1818 and named after the Duke of Richmond, this small village was the second military settlement in Ontario after the 1812 war. The first settlers were soldiers and their families from the British Army regiments that were disbanded in Canada in the late 1800s.

Richmond is a nice small historic area, it also has quite a few memorials. There are plaques, honour rolls, street names, signs in cemeteries to indicate where some veterans are buried, Richmond also has a beautiful small memorial park and cenotaph that honours local war dead.

The cenotaph which consists of an 8 foot tall cross made of dark polished Barre granite from Quebec and supported by a Stanstead grey base was dedicated and unveiled on November 6th 1988. Behind, there is a fieldstone wall with 2 plaques. On the right of the cenotaph, there is a sign with the names of the local servicemen who were killed in action.

**Thanks to Louise Bellec for the photos and description.
