Richmond Ontario, now part of Ottawa since the amalgamation, is 36km away from the downtown core. Founded in 1818 and named after the Duke of Richmond, this small village was the second military settlement in Ontario after the 1812 war. The first settlers were soldiers and their families from the British Army regiments that were disbanded in Canada in the late 1800s.
Richmond is a nice small historic area, it also has quite a few memorials. There are plaques, honour rolls, street names, signs in cemeteries to indicate where some veterans are buried, Richmond also has a beautiful small memorial park and cenotaph that honours local war dead.
The cenotaph which consists of an 8 foot tall cross made of dark polished Barre granite from Quebec and supported by a Stanstead grey base was dedicated and unveiled on November 6th 1988. Behind, there is a fieldstone wall with 2 plaques. On the right of the cenotaph, there is a sign with the names of the local servicemen who were killed in action.
**Thanks to Louise Bellec for the photos and description.
