Wainfleet

Location:  Niagara Region     N 42 55.346   W -79 22.521
On Park Street, just east of Highway 3, beside the library.

This memorial was erected in 2014 by the citizens of Wainfleet Township.  The grey granite cenotaph gives a simple message of remembrance in both official languages.  Located in a small parkette beside the library, the grounds are well landscaped and includes a small bench to respectfully sit and remember the sacrifices of the past.  The township offices are located across the road to the east and it is my understanding that two Honour Roll plaques are located inside the offices, listing the names of all from this township who made the supreme sacrifice for peace and freedom.

Kintore

Location:  Oxford County     N 43 08.256   W -81 02.094
In the cemetery at 842890 Road 84, on the west edge of the village.

The memorial is found in the Kintore Presbyterian Cemetery, high on a hill near the entrance.  Originally erected to honour those from this area lost in the First World War, the names now include men also lost in the Second World War as well.  A statue of Italian marble stands proudly over the names of his fellow soldiers, those who paid the supreme sacrifice.  The statue shows the wear of a century of weathering and at some time in that period suffered damage to its left eye, the cause of the damage remaining unknown but somehow fitting given the horror of the Great War.

Alfred

Location:  United Counties of Prescott and Russell
N 45.558846   W -74.879810
On the median between St. Philippe Street and Telegraph Road.  Across the road from St. Victor Church.

Alfred is a predominately French speaking village founded in 1871.  Known for its agricultural college as well as being the french fry capital of Canada, this small village was also home to several brave soldiers of the World Wars.  The names of those who served appear on the cenotaph built in a long park situated on a median along the main street.  The cenotaph consist of several parts, a cross which represents the Catholic Franco-Ontarian heritage of the region adorned with three fluer-dis-lis to remember the French language spoken here, three flagpoles with the Ontario, Canadian, and Franco-Ontario flags, a black marble stone which acts as the main part of the cenotaph, and a tall sign-type plaque with the names of those who served.  Several benches provide a calm place to rest and reflect on the sacrifice made by all who died and by those who returned broken and pained.

*Special thank you to Louise Bellec for the photos and very helpful information.

Espanola

Location:  Sudbury District     N 46 15.129  W 81 45.964
In front of the Legion, 370 Annette Street.

This memorial was first dedicated in November 1967, and was originally located in Mead Street Park.  In 1982, the memorial was moved to its current site in front of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 39.  This is the main location for the town's Remembrance Day ceremonies.  The names engraved on the cenotaph were all local residents who made the supreme sacrifice in both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan.
A World War II artillery piece is also found here, a 25-pounder C Mk. 2 QF Field Gun to be precise.

Oil Springs

Location:  Lambton County     N 42 47.027   W-82.07.308
On the southeast corner of Oil Springs Line and Elizabeth Street.

Oil Springs is home to the first oil discovery and the first commercial oil well in North America, when in 1858 two local men made the find while searching the local swamp for a gooey waterproofing material.  The rest is history as they say, and the village of Oil Springs was born.  Home to the the Oil Museum of Canada, this sleepy little town was once the hub of the oil industry.

The cenotaph was erected in 1919 on the former site of the village's largest hotel, Sherman House.  The names engraved on the memorial are from the men who gave their lives in the World Wars.  Also listed on the side is the name of young man lost in the South African War.  A unique statue is carved into the front of the memorial, presumably to depict one of the fallen sons. The names of the major battles of WWI are also carved into the base of the statue.  The memorial represents the village of Oil Springs and the township of Enniskillen.  Situated in a quiet parkette, along with a pair of benches, this is a nice place to reflect and remember the sacrifices of the past, and the incredible history of this village.
