Peaches

Location:  York Region   N 43 55.290  W 079 17.900
At the northwest corner of Elgin Mills Road and McCowan road, in the Town of Markham.

I found this wonderful memorial completely by accident.  This busy intersection is now part of an expanding Town of Markham, but at one time would have been a very small and very rural farming village.  The area was first settled in the early 1800's by United Empire Loyalists, as well as immigrants of German descent, who came by way of Pennsylvania.  The United Church and cemetery was established in 1847, and the men from this congregation who served during the World Wars are remembered by stone plaques embedded into the sides of the church, and some are buried in the cemetery.  This as such an amazing contribution from such a tiny community, one that no longer exists except within the confines of the churchyard.  I am not sure if the church is still in use, however the grounds are well kept and tidy.

Bridgeport

Location:  Waterloo Region   N 43 28.900  W 080 28.386
Found at the back of the small cemetery at 76 Bloomingdale Road North.

This memorial, found in Bridgeport Cemetery is dedicated to those of the village who died in the First and Second World Wars.  It was made possible by a group of local residents and the Bridgeport Women's Institute, who unveiled this unique Book of Remembrance on June 29th, 1947.  A pleasant walk around the cemetery will also reveal gravestones of other veterans of the wars.  The village of Bridgeport, on the east shore of the Grand River,  is now part of the larger city of Kitchener-Waterloo.

Pickering

Location: Durham Region   N 43 50.267  W 079 04.975
On the north side of The Esplanade S, beside the Pickering Library/City Hall.

This memorial consists of two parts, a mix of old and new, standing side by side. The old is dedicated to the memory of those from a school section, presumably one nearby.  The new is represented by a modern looking granite obelisk, with a metal plaque on the front.  Located conveniently beside the City Hall, in Esplanade Park.

Brussels

Location:  Huron County   N 43 44.530  W 081 15.093
On the west side of Turnberry Street, near the south end of town, beside the Legion.

The very nice memorial sits beside the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #218, and is dedicated to the men of Brussels, Morris and Grey.  This is a small farming community, which was celebrating its 140th anniversary at the time of my visit.
The memorial consists of three granite shafts, the centre shaft in honour of those who died in World War I, the two outer shafts dedicated to World War II.  I believe the memorial was erected at first after the Great War, and the second shafts added after the Second War.

Millbrook

Location:  Peterborough County   N 44 09.009  W 078 26.919
On the south side of King Street, in front of the Nextcom Building, across the road from the Post Office.

A beautiful statue on top of a black granite shaft, this memorial rests in one my favourite small town locations.  A visit to Millbrook's downtown area is like a step back in time, with wonderful small town charm.  The memorial was erected soon after the Great War, by the municipalities of Millbrook and Cavan.  Later the Second World War and Korea were acknowledged.

Ravenna

Location:  Grey County  N 44 28.209  W 080 25.010
In a small park at the northeast corner of Grey Road 2 and Grey Road 119.

Ravenna is a very small farming community, formerly Collingwood Township, in the hills of Grey County, however its contribution to the war effort in the Great Wars was not so small.  A long list of names of the dead appear on the front of this memorial, and a larger list of names of those who served is engraved on the back.  It is the small rural communities like this all across Canada which provided the brave men needed to defend our freedom.  A statue of a soldier standing at attention graces the top of this memorial.
