Tamworth

Location:  Lennox and Addington County     N 44° 29.212 W 076° 59.656
At the corner of Concession Street South and Ottawa Street, beside the library.

This memorial was originally erected to honour those from this community who served in the Great War.  The names of the dead are engraved on the front of the granite stele, and the names of the men and one Nursing Sister who returned are found on the sides.
On the back of the memorial are engraved the names of those lost in World War II, and the Korean War is also acknowledged, although no one from Tamworth was lost in Korea.
The memorial is placed in a place of honour beside the beautiful library, near the main intersection in town.  The Union Jack flag can be found decorating the cenotaph.  A very nice memorial for a small town, well kept and well supported by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 458.

Whitney

Location:  Nipissing District     N 45 29.678   W 78 14.426
On the west side of Highway 60, at Galeairy Lake Road.

A beautiful setting along the shores of Galeairy Lake, sits a small veteran's park with a stone cairn and an artillery piece.
The stone cairn recognizes the local men lost in World War II.  Six names appear on the plaque, forever remembered in this small village near the east gate of Algonquin Park.
The artillery piece is a 155mm, made in Sorel, Quebec in 1955.

This memorial is a fine tribute to the memory the men from Whitney, and holds a prominent position in the small village, easily visible to the hundreds of tourists that pass by here on a warm summer day.

St. Williams

Location:   Norfolk County     N 42 40.040   W 80 24.886
At the corner of Townline Street and Queen Street, which is the main intersection in town.

This is one of those memorials that took my by complete surprise.  I was passing through this small village on my way to another town, when I spotted this cairn in the setting sun.  I was pleasantly surprised that such a small community had taken the initiative to create a memorial to honour the memory of those who had served and died in the First World War.
This old memorial, erected by the Royal Legion in 1930, has never been updated to include any subsequent wars or conflicts, and holds a very prominent spot at the main crossroads in town.
The cairn is made of fieldstone, with a golden coloured plaque engraved with the names of the heroes of the past.

Paris

Location:   Brant County   N 43 11.529  W 80 23.029
At the corner of Grand River Street and Mechanic Street, immediately north of the river.

This memorial is in a busy and honoured spot along the main street through the pretty town of Paris.
Originally the memorial was erected to honour the men and women lost in the First World War.  The names of the major battles of that conflict are engraved in the monument.  No names of those lost appear anywhere in this memorial.
After the Second World War, two stone shafts were added to recognize the battles of the second major war.  Again, no names can be found anywhere.  The list of names is likely long, as Paris is a fairly large community, so as with most towns of any size, only the battles are listed.
At the entrance of this lovely parkette, there is also an elegant Verdin post clock with the words "Lest We Foget" painted in gold, also to honour the many men and women who served and sacrificed.
