Merrickville

Location:  Leeds and Grenville United Counties
N 44.913852  W -75.836036
400 St. Lawrence St. (corner of Drummond St. E.)

Flanked by the Canadian flag and the Union Jack, this 10 to 12 feet tall stone cairn was constructed in 1938 in time for the Remembrance ceremony honouring local servicemen. Later on a plaque for WWII and Korean War were added.  Although that no names appear on the Korean War plaque it nonetheles honours everyone who served and who died in that war.

In 2017 there was a record attendance at the Rembrance ceremony as there was also a special guest, his Excellency Jang Hoi Kim, consul general of South Korea who also laid a wreath at the cenotaph.

Also, in that park, there is a 25 pounder field gun and a Vimy Oak which was planted on May 13, 2017.

**Thanks to Louise Bellec for the great write up and photos.

On the north side of King Street, in front of the old Town Hall.

This memorial is a classic WWI memorial with a statue of a soldier, made of Italian marble marble.  The names of those lost in the First War War, along with their battalion affiliation, are engraved in the black granite base.  The names of those lost in the Second World War were added later.  The memorial is located beside the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 468.
There is some speculation as to whether or not this was the first memorial in Ontario to be dedicated after WWI.  I have not found any evidence to confirm or dispute the claim that this was the first memorial of its kind in Ontario, but if so, then it is certainly worthy of praise for the local citizens of the time to ensure the names of their lost heroes would be honoured forever.

North Gower

Location:  City of Ottawa

GPS: N 45,129583  W 75.716895
2353 Perkins Drive, in Horace Seabrook Park.

This cenotaph is situated in the far right end of Horace Seabrook Park. One would never know that a small community would have a cenotaph especially as it is located in a secondary street away from the main intersections, where there is barely any traffic.

This 8 foot tall (about) memorial made of concrete sits on a parquet of laid out bricks. The top part of this simple cenotaph has a typical cross of sacrifice and just below a new sign that was added in 2018 before Remembrance Day. Compared to what it was before "To Those Who Served" was just painted on this cenotaph. The new sign gives it a little extra and looks much nicer.

This cenotaph might be simple but sends a message that every generation should always remember and have gratitude.  Whether our soldiers  have survived the war or be killed in action, for if it were not for their sacrifice we might not be here today .

***Special thanks once again to Louise Bellec for providing the photos and description.
