Oshawa

Location:  Durham Region     N 43.8941766    W -78.8620625
In Memorial Park, Simcoe Street South at John Street.

This memorial was constructed in memory of citizens of Oshawa who sacrificed their lives in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. It was erected by the City of Oshawa. Dr. T.E. Kaiser was the leader of the drive to erect a monument dedicated to the citizens of Oshawa who had sacrificed their lives in the First World War. It was Kaiser's daughter, Josephine, who suggested the "Garden of the Unforgotten" for the Park.
The monument was unveiled by Sir William Mulock, Chief Justice of Ontario, on November 11, 1924. The monument included bronze tablets which listed the names of 138 Oshawa residents killed in the First World War. The monument, though based on a structure in Evesham, England, is quite unique. The memorial contains stones of every First World War Allied Nation, as well as stones from many of the battlefields where Canadians lost their lives. Included in the memorial are stones from England, Scotland, Egypt, Newfoundland, Russia and Japan. Battles immortalized in the Oshawa monument include: Ypres, Vimy Ridge, Arras and Passchendale.
Another special feature of the monument is what lies beneath it. An airtight copper box is buried underneath the structure. It contains artefacts of 1924, such as newspapers, photos, and a cheque from the mayor to pay for the replacement of the slab that must be removed to unearth the box. The time capsule is to be opened in the year 2424. The bronze figure of a Canadian Infantryman still stands, surveying Memorial Park from on top of the monument. In 1948, more plaques were added to mark the losses that Oshawa families suffered in the Second World War and, later, recognition was given to the residents who went to Korea during 1950-53.
The City of Oshawa council approved improvements to Memorial Park in 2000. They included new entrances, new benches and lights, new pathways, and a Garden of the Unforgotten by the memorial. The monument obviously holds an important place in Oshawa's history and it is witness to solemn ceremonies each Remembrance Day.  * from https://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/memorials/national-inventory-canadian-memorials/details/5571

I apologize for the misspelling of any names listed on the plaques, my photos are not as clear as I would have liked.

Maynard

Location:  United Counties of Leeds and Grenville
GPS: N 44.726110   W 75. 574180
Address: 3567 County Road 26, at the cemetery entrance.

Maynard is a small community part of Augusta Township in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville and is situated about 5km northwest from Prescott along County Rd 26.

The cenotaph lies just beside the historical Maynard Cemetery on CR 26 between Merwyn Ln and Charleville Rd. I came across this beautiful monument by chance, as I by-passed the Trans-Canada Highway 401 West trying to avoid congestion. It reminded me of the North Gower cenotaph, situated in an area where there is not much traffic and that maybe only locals know about it. I also noted the similarities with the Toledo cenotaph.  Cenotaph was dedicated in 1920.

Flanked by the Canadian flag and the Union Jack, the cenotaph lies on a floor of tiled stones with two benches placed at an angle behind it. Leading to it, as you climb the four steps, you will notice a few trees and potted plants that adds a nice touch to this memorial. Also surrounded by some trees, it offers a quiet resting time to think of the hardship these soldiers went through and to the unselfish act of bravery of laying their lives for future generations, so we could live in peace and freedom.

Placed at an angle, originally, the cenotaph was erected for the fallen local soldiers of WWI of Augusta township, which later on plaques commemorating soldiers of WWII were added in September 1948. Once stood behind the memorial, an oak tree from the Royal Kew Gardens to mark the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937 but was removed in 1980 due to disease.

***Special thanks to Louise Bellec for the photos and description.
