Orono - Orono Cemetery

Location:  Durham Region  N 43 59.199  W 078 37.046
At the entrance to the Orono Cemetery, at the north end of Mill Lane, which runs off Mill Street.

The gates to the Orono Cemetery mark the location of the first memorial in town.  It was built in November of 1922, in memory of those who lost their lives in World War I.  The memorial consist of four stone pillars that form the cemetery gates.  Two brass plaques, one on each side of the gate, list the names of the dead.

Goderich - Maitland Cemetery

Location:  Huron County  N 43° 43.888 W 081° 40.956
The cemetery is located on the east side of Huron Road (Regional Road 8), north of Orchard Line.  

This cemetery is the final resting place for dozens of veterans of all wars.  Several rows of traditional military gravestones lie behind the stone cairn, marking this sad memorial.  A simple cobblestone cairn, topped with a white cross and a plaque, decorated with colourful wreaths of remembrance.

Hastings - Trent Valley Cemetery

 

Location:  Trent Hills, Northumberland County  N 44 19.059  W 077 56.166
The cemetery is found at the end of an un-named road, north of Concession Road 13E, just east of Dunlay Road.

Trent Valley Cemetery is a pleasant resting place for many local residents.  A Memorial located near the centre of the cemetery pays tribute to the fallen heroes of all wars, and the grave markers of several veterans can be found throughout the grounds.  The Memorial was placed by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 106, in nearby Hastings.

North York - York Cemetery

Enter the cemetery on the west side of Beecroft Road.

The York Cemetery is the resting place of many veterans, a place for remembrance and tribute.  I previously covered the main central memorial  back on June 18th, 2012.
Today we deal with more specific memorials found in the cemetery.  Scattered throughout the grounds are various artillery pieces with small plaques, and also a Sherman tank dedicated to the Governor General's Horse Guards.  A field of honour also displays dozens in small stones dedicated to individual veterans, row upon row, lying in the well kept grass.
There is also, nearby, a memorial in remembrance of veterans who served with the Soviet Union during the Second World War.

Milverton - Greenwood Cemetery

Found in the southwest corner of Greenwood Cemetery, off of Cobalt Street N.

This memorial to those veterans who served during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War was erected by Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 565.
The main memorial is front and centre, while behind lie the stones of the brave veterans buried here.

Buckhorn

 

Location:  Peterborough County  N 44 33.214  W 078 21.681
In front of the Buckhorn Community Centre, on Lakehurst Road (Regional Road 37).

Constructed circa 1945-46 in memory of those who gave their lives in the two World Wars. The Buckhorn Cenotaph was erected in 1946 by the local Women's Institute. It was first located on property in the hamlet occupied by the local Presbyterian Church at the corner of Main and John Street. The Presbyterian church was vacated in the 1970's and the building became a flea market. The local people felt this was not a proper location for a war memorial and, eventually, Lakefield Royal Canadian Legion Branch 77 members and veterans of the Second World War, Mel Swan and Harry Monks, arranged to have the monument moved to its present site at the Buckhorn Community Centre. Mel and Harry supervised the move and prepared the present site. Local aggregate operator, Buckhorn Sand & Gravel supplied a machine and operator to do all the actual moving of the monument. Mel Swan advises the date for the move was September 15, no record of the original dedication when it was first erected and no service had ever been held involving this monument prior to this time. The Lakefield Legion members, members of Buckhorn area community and led by Rev. Gordon Porter accorded the Buckhorn War Memorial full honours at a rededication ceremony on Sunday, November 8, 1981, at 12:00 noon. Since the move to the Community Centre location, the people of the Buckhorn area have continued to hold Remembrance Services with the assistance and co-operation of the Lakefield Legion Br. 77.
