Aberfoyle

Location:  Township of Puslinch, Wellington County

Found beside the Puslinch Community Centre, at 21 Brock Street S (Wellington Road 46).

A beautiful granite statue, with the names of dead from the Great War, was unveiled on June 3, 1920.  After the Second World War, in 1949, the names of those who died in that war were inscribed and the memorial was once again the site of a grand memorial service.  The memorial represents the Township of Puslinch, and is located in the village of Aberfoyle.

Usborne - Hensall Cemetery

 

Location:  Huron County  N 43 25.055  W 081 28.817
Located in Hensall Union Cemetery, on the south side of Rodgerville Road, between Morrison Line and London Road.

This cemetery is home to two memorials, a small modern memorial dedicated in 1994 by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 468.  The second and larger memorial is reputed to be the first memorial erected in Ontario after the Great War.  The memorial was first unveiled in March of 1919, in front of the SS#1 Hurondale Public School in Usborne Township, until this school closed in 1965.  The memorial was then re-located to the Usborne Central Public School in 1967, as part of a Centennial Project.  The Usborne Central School closed its doors for the last time in June of 2012, and the memorial was on the move again, this time to its current location in the Hensall Union Cemetery, in the former Usborne Township.
The memorial itself was a blueprint for other memorials to follow, featuring a soldier statue atop a granite shaft, with the names of the local dead inscribed in the stone.

Location:  Caledon, Peel Region  N 43 51.292  W 080 04.416
In front of the Legion, on the south side of 1267 Queen Street W, around 500 metres east of Mississauga Road.

Erected in 1989 by the Town of Caledon.  This memorial sits proudly in front of the Lt Algie V. C. Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 449.  It was dedicated to those who lost their lives in war, by the Families and Citizens of the Town of Caledon.  Alton is a picturesque village, well worth the visit and a great place to walk on a summer day.

The Woodbridge War Memorial Tower was constructed in 1924 by volunteer members of the community in honour of the supreme sacrifice made by the 26 men from the Woodbridge area killed in the First World War.  The tower was unveiled by Colonel Harry Cockshutt, the Lieut-Governor of Ontario.
The site is designed in four stepped levels: the highest level is occupied by the tower and a pair of German field guns.  The third level also hosts an artillery piece, along with the flagpoles and an area for wreaths and remembrance.  The base level consists of a stone gateway and staircase, featuring an engraved marker and two plaques added later, one to commemorate Canada's 1967 Centennial Year, and the other erected by the politicians of the City of Vaughan in 1996 to congratulate themselves for agreeing to spend the funds to updated and landscape the park, something which they should be continually doing in any case.

This is one of the more impressive and beautiful Memorial parks I have visited.  A true testament to the sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom.

Hastings - Mount Carmel Catholic Church

In front of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, at 51 Albert Street, in Hastings.

A very nice memorial erected by Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, to remember those men from this congregation who gave their lives in the two World Wars.  A granite shaft adorned with a golden angel.  This memorial was originally placed in the walkway leading to the front doors of  the church, now it was been moved onto the grass beside the walkway.

Stoney Creek - Saltfleet Memorial

 

Location:  City of Hamilton  N 43. 13.173  W 079 43.778
On the south-west corner of King Street and Queenston Road (Highway 8).

This memorial cenotaph was constructed in 1922, in memory of the men of Saltfleet Township, who gave their lives in the First World War.  The centoaph consists of a bronze statue, on top of a large granite shaft, with the names inscribed for eternity.  Oddly, this is one of the few memorials which dates the war 1914-1919.
After the Second World War, a granite block was placed in front of the statue, with the names of those lost in World War II, and later a single name lost in Korea.
