Colborne
Location: Northumberland County N 44 00.324 W -77 53.327
In Victoria Park, 1 King Street West
This memorial, found in Victoria Park is made up of two memorials. The first being the main memorial which was erected to honour those who served and died in the Great War. The second was erected as a separate memorial to honour those lost in the Second World War. The park is also home to a gazebo, picnic benches, historical plaques and cannons, and is the central park in this small town.
The Great War memorial features a very weather-worn statue of Italian marble standing on top of a granite stone. The names of those who served, and those who died are forever engraved in the stone for all to remember. As seen many times in these small town memorials, the long list of names far outweighs the population of the citizens, showing the commitment made by local men to serve their country in time of war.
The second memorial erected for World War II features the names of the dead, but not of those who served. It is a single piece of grey granite, no statue, but well taken care of. The Korean War is also acknowledged on the back of this stone. The local branch 187 of the Royal Canadian Legion is very active in the community and takes great pride each year in hosting the Remembrance Day parade and ceremony.
The setting for these memorials is very attractive and helps to make this memorial one of my favourites to visit. I highly recommend stopping to pay your respects when in the area.
