Ontario War Memorials: Sault Ste. Marie

In front of the courthouse, 426 Queen Street East.

This memorial was unveiled in September of 1924 to great fanfare from the entire city. The Governor General of Canada, Lord Byng was among the dignitaries present on the day, as where thousands of local citizens. The sculpture standing on top of the 22 foot high monument was designed by Alfred Howell of Toronto, and the theme was "TRIUMPH OF RIGHT OVER THE GOD OF WAR". The crouching figure under a shield represents the God of War. The draped figure holding a sword in the right hand and left hand holding maple leaf leaves represents the Triumph of Right.

The famous author Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem specifically for this grand memorial, it was graciously engraved forever in the granite.

The memorial was refurbished and rededicated in 1992, under the direction and fundraising of the Royal Canadian legion Branch 25. When I visited in 2019, some further work was being done to keep the monument and grounds up to date.

In the first four months of the First World War 1,500 men, nearly one tenth of the population of Sault Ste. Marie, enlisted. Three hundred and fifty died fighting. Their names are engraved in the grey granite stone, although very difficult to read. The names of those who died in the Second World War, Korea and Afghanistan where later added.

A plaque in front of the memorial is dedicated to Sgt. William Merrifield, who was awarded the Victoria Cross and Military Medal for bravery in the Great War.
