Sharon

Location:  Region of York, East Gwillimbury  N 44 06.152  W 079 26.520                                       Found on the west side of Leslie Street, at Mount Albert road, in front of the East Gwillimbury Town Offices, beside the Sharon Temple.

This memorial symbolizes a grieving mother with a child in her arms. It is intended to be a peace memorial rather than a war memorial. Colonel F.A. Tilston, V.C., C.D., LLD. unveiled the memorial on September 16, 1990, with numerous dignitaries in attendance from the Armed Forces, veterans, representatives of federal and provincial governments as well as regional mayors and other dignitaries. The statue was created by a man from Holland, symbolizing all the suffering of a country at war, but it also symbolizes our hope for peace in the future. It is placed prominently in front of the Civic Centre to remind citizens of the supreme sacrifice made by those whose names appear on the memorial.                                                                                   Source: www.town.eastgwillimbury.on.ca/tourism/rememday.htm

Oshawa Airport

Location:  Durham Region, City of Oshawa  N 43° 55.022 W 078° 53.641                                          Found on Stevenson Road, north of Rossland Road, at the airport.

This is a busy post for memorial seekers and for those who enjoy military history.  The memorial is located in a small park, with a Sabre Jet mounted on a pedestal (see my entry of April 27, 2012), a memorial to celebrate the 100 years of flight in Canada, and the two plaques which I am featuring today.  Across the road from the Air Force related memorials, is the home of the Ontario Regiment Museum, home to a large collection of military vehicles and artifacts, and well worth the time to visit.

These two plaques are dedicated to The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan of World War 2.  Oshawa airport was home of the #20 Elementary Flight Training School, and contributed greatly to the war effort in the skies over Europe.

The first memorial is presented along with a prop from an Argus aircraft, mounted in the ground beside the plaque.
The second plaque is mounted on a large boulder.  Text is bilingual, but I have chosen to only show the English version, thank you.

Edenvale - Glengarry Landing

Location:  Simcoe County, Springwater Township   N 44° 27.051 W 079° 54.071                             Located on the north side of Highway 26, just west of Edenvale, at the entrance to Edenvale Conservation Area.

A key spot in the 1814 campaign of the War of 1812, now a National Historic Site, Glengarry Landing was the starting point for a flotilla of the Glengarry Light Infantry to make important advances in the west.  The flotilla was led by Lt.-Col. Robert McDouall (March, 1774 – 15 November 1848) was a Scottish-born officer in the British Army, who saw much action during the Napoleonic Wars and the Anglo-America War of 1812. He is best known for serving as the commandant of Fort Mackinac from 1814 until the end of the War of 1812.

At the forks of the Nottawasaga River, Lt.-Col. Robert
McDouall, Glengarry Light Infantry, built the flotilla of boats
with which he effected the relief of the British garrison at Fort
Michilimackinac, in May 1814. He then organized a second
expedition which, on 19th July, captured Prairie du Chien,
on the Mississippi.
