Kingston - I.O.D.E. Cenotaph

Location:  Frontenac County   N 44 13.342  076 29.480
On the south side of King Street, at George Street, beside the Murney Tower.

Kingston has a long and proud military history, perhaps more so than any city in Canada.  After the Great War, the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire commissioned this wonderful cenotaph to honour the brave men and women of Kingston who gave their lives in the war.  It was erected in 1925, to great fanfare and great thanks for the sacrifices made.
Later the dates of the Second World War and Korea where added to the memorial, which proudly stands in the shadow of the impressive Murney Tower.

Cooksville

Location:  Peel Region   N 43 35.768  W 079 36.008
At the entrance to the St. John's Dixie Cemetery, at 737 Dundas Street East.

This touching memorial is located at the entrance to the St. John's Dixie Cemetery, once part of the village of Cooksville.  Today, little remains of the village from the times prior to the 1940's, having been engulfed by the City Of Mississauga, and now only known as a small neighourhood of a much larger city.  The area has been completely paved over and replaced by modern progress.  Sadly, the men of Cooksville who died in the World Wars, would not recognize their village today.  History has passed them by.
The memorial was erected in 2001 by the Cooskville Branch 582 of the Royal Canadian Legion, which thankfully remembers the past and the sacrifices of those who served, and to those who are interred in this cemetery, one of the few lasting remnants of a once proud village.  Lest We Forget.

Warsaw

Location:  Peterborough County  N 44 25.817  W 078 08.231
On the east side of the corner of Mill and Water Streets.

This memorial is dedicated to those brave men of Dummer Township who gave their lives in the First World War.  Erected in 1921, by the local memorial committee.  A stone soldier stands at attention at the top of the memorial, while below him inscribed in the stone are the words 'OUR HEROES'.  A brass plaque lists the names and dates of death of these local heroes.  Seeing the dates of the day they fell, gives a sad feel to the loss of a small community, as indeed the last days of the Great War were the most devastating.

Penetanguishene

Location:  Simcoe County   N 44 46.063  W 079 55.974
On the east side of Main Street, in Memorial Park.

A very nice memorial, made of large bricks, dedicated to those who fell during the two Great Wars.  A smaller plaque was added later to recognize those lost in the Korean War.  Penetanguishene has been the home of a military presence since before the days of the War of 1812, providing a valuable port and link between the Great Lakes.  During the Great Wars, the men of this area continued their valuable contribution by serving gallantly overseas, and giving their lives when called upon.

Port Burwell

Location:  Elgin County   N 42 38.749  W 080 48.317
20 Pitt Street, on the corner of Pitt Street and Erius Street

Located in Ken Kirkpatrick Memorial Park, this fabulous memorial was erected in 1929 in honour of those killed on the First World War.  A plaque added later recognizes those lost in the Second World War.  The parkette is beautifully tended, with an abundance of flowers and shrubs.  An anchor rests at the foot of the steps leading into the parkette, and a plaque honouring Ken Kirkpatrick is also found at the entrance.

A short distance to the west, can be found the H.M.C.S. Ojibwa, and Oberon Class submarine that acts as a living museum, offering tours and gift shop.  Don't miss this great piece of history, and a wonderful tour.
