Manitoulin Island - Merchant Navy

Location:  Manitoulin Island     N 45 42.782   W 82 14.778
At the corner of Highway 551 and Monument Road.

This memorial is part of the larger Manitoulin District Cenotaph, featuring several memorials seen on this blog previously.   http://ontariowarmemorials.blogspot.com/2017/09/manitoulin-district-cenotaph.html

The Merchant Navy memorial pays tribute to the unsung role of the Merchant Navy during the World Wars and Korea.  Canada lost approximately 31 vessels and 2200 sailors during the vital fight for supply of overseas troops.  Plaques on the memorial list the many ships lost along with the year of their sinking.  The stone plaque with the ship, has been restored since my visit, as the lettering had begun to weather badly.  An anchor rest on top of the memorial and a flagpole mast nicely completes the nautical look.  Thanks to the local residents and legion members for the care and upkeep of this outstanding memorial.  All ships listed were lost in World War II, but the commitment of the Merchant Navy is remembered through all the wars.
