Alexandria

Location:  United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry
N 45.316562  W 74.641329
212 Main St N. (Highway 34) between Glengarry District High School and McDougall St. W.

This memorial, known as the Glengarry Memorial was unveiled in October 1923 by the Governor General of Canada, Lord Byng of Vimy.  The tall, octagonal, cobblestone cairn is topped with a Celtic Cross.  The names of the major battles of WWI appear around the top of the stone base.  Two brass plaques list the names of those lost in the two World Wars, and a smaller plaque recognizes the Korean War. The inscription of "Ha Cuimhuich Agaim", found on the plaques,  means " I Remember" in Scottish Gaelic.  Also listed on this beautiful memorial is the name of Claude Nunney, awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in September 1918 on the Drocourt-Queant Line, he died sixteen days later of his wounds.  There is also a plaque next to a tree that was planted in 2009 to celebrate the 100 years of flight in Canada.  A 6-pounder anti-tank gun is also displayed alongside the memorial.

**Special thanks to fellow researcher Louise Bellec for the photos and much of the description.
