Petrolia

 Location:  Lambton County     N 42 52.912   W -82 08.863

In Victoria Park, 4196 Petrolia Line.

This beautiful memorial was designed by the famous sculptor Emmanuel Hahn of Toronto. His works have been seen on several statues of Great War memorials, including the nearby village of Alvinston.  This memorial was erected in 1922 to great fanfare and remembrance of those who gave all.  The solemn soldier stands proudly in Petrolia's Victoria Park, his tired body resting on a cross denoting "In Flanders Fields".  The base of the statue lists the names of those brave men who fought and died in World War I, and the back of the base lists the horrible battles in which they perished.  The names of those lost in World War II where added at the sides of the monument, and the Korean War is also recognized.

In 2012, the memorial was cleaned and restored to its former glory, the details of the beautiful sculpture and the names of the heroic dead once again visible for generations to come.

For more details of the memorial and the heritage behind the names engraved on the stone, I refer you to these two websites, both full of great information and historic photos.
