Forest

Location:  Lambton County     N 43.10252   W -81.99543

6272 County Road 12 (Townsend Line), in front of the Community Hall.

This memorial proudly stands in front of the Forest Community Hall, the statue of a Great War soldier, carved from Italian marble, standing tall over the grey granite shaft that will forever display the names of those who died in the two World Wars.  The memorial was originally unveiled in 1922 to great ceremony and dignity.  The original location was on King Street, north of the railroad station.  In 1950, the statue was re-located to its present location, to ensure its continuing importance and maintenance by the town landscaper.  In 2017 the Municipality of Lambton Shores undertook a major restoration of the grounds surrounding the Cenotaph. The following year the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 176, with funding assistance in the form of a grant from Veteran Affairs commissioned major restoration work on the statue. A re-dedication ceremony was held on June 3, 2019.  Today, a pair of "Lest We Forget" benches sit beside the pathway that leads to the cenotaph and saplings of the Vimy Oaks Legacy have been planted to accompany the statue of the lone soldier who peers down upon the names of the dead in sad remembrance.

For more information about the cenotaph, see the website of the Forest Legion Br. 176:  https://forestlegion.ca/cenotaph

Galt - Mountview Cemetery

Location:  Waterloo Region     N 43.36147   W -80.32814

At the south end of Mountview Cemetery, just off Blenheim Road.

This memorial was erected to honour the men of Galt who died in the First World War.  Galt is now part of the larger city of Cambridge, but it once had its own identity, history and charm.  A beautiful part of the city, well worth visiting if you are in the area.

The Honour Roll lists those lost, as well as the battle, affiliation, age and date of death.  The stone with the engraving is made of granite, while the accompanying statue of a soldier at rest, is made of marble.  The statue is weathered although it retains its distinct importance as given to it by the Sons of England Society that commissioned the work.  The beauty of this statue and the quiet setting of the cemetery give the viewer much time and opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice of those who gave all for our freedom.

Glanford

Location:  City of Hamilton     N 43.16575   W -79.90945

St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery, 2869 Upper James Street.

This memorial is found in the cemetery of the St. Paul's Anglican Church, in what was known as the hamlet of Glanford.  The small community is now part of the city of Hamilton, although it still sits on the outskirts of the city, albeit on a very busy road.  The memorial is located at the graves of fourteen airmen who died in training at the nearby Mount Hope airfield during WWII.  This was part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (B.C.A.T.P.).  A plaque at the site tells the brief history of the R.A.F. Remembrance Garden and the story of the men who rest here.  All across our nation can be found the graves of those who died in training, never having had the chance to face the enemy, nonetheless, their loss is still as tragic and full of sorrow as anyone else who served or died overseas.

"THEY SLIPPED THE SURLY BONDS OF EARTH"

The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (B.C.A.T.P.) was

inaugurated in 1939 at the onset of the Second World War to provide

air training for Commonwealth airmen, safely removed from active

war zones.  The Canadian Government sponsor this war-winning

plan which produced approximately 140,000 airmen and 45,000

ground crew.

Six of the one hundred and seven Canadian B.C.A.T.P. airfields

were located in this part of Ontario.  No. 33 Air Navigation School at

Mount Hope was established in 1941 in addition to No. 10 Elementary

Flying School and No. 1 Air Wireless School.  Between November

1941 and December 1943, sixteen R.A.F. servicemen in the Air

Navigation School died while training here and all but two were

buried in St. Paul's Glanford Anglican Cemetery.  A service

of remembrance has been held annually for these men who lie

far from home.  In 2000, a Remembrance Garden was planted by the

congregation and dedicated to the memory of these R.A.F. members.

Kars

Location:  City of Ottawa     N 45.15290  W -75.64862

On the west side of Rideau Valley Drive, in front of the public school.

The village of Kars is located south of the city of Ottawa, along the historic Rideau River.   The memorial was erected in 1978, and then moved to this location in 2011.  The cenotaph consists of a stylized sword formed into a cross and a simple message of "To Those Who Served" inscribed on its base.  A series of engraved paving stones located in front of the memorial list the names of the fallen, as well as those who served.  The stones can be purchased with the engraving at the family's request, this in turn helps to fund the maintenance of the memorial.  The grey bricks are engraved with the names of those who served, while the red bricks are the names of donors and supporters.  The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 314 oversees the care of the grounds and the annual Remembrance Day ceremonies held at this location.

***Special thanks to Louise Bellec for her photos and her diligence at compiling the long list of names found on the memorial bricks.
